Thomas Ferguson tea towels are not to be underestimated and not to be confused with cheap items from other sources. There is no compromising on quality. It is not often high-quality line yarns are used for weaving tea towels. More often cheaper tow yarns made from the shorter coarser flax fibres are used. Tow yarns are softer and fuzzier, but not as hard wearing.
Linen fabrics, made from the flax fibre, have antimicrobial properties. Therefore, it reduces the growth of microbes including fungi and bacteria. This makes it ideal for use in the kitchen and handling food.
Flax fibre is one of the strongest vegetable fibres, and it gets stronger when wet. It is a cellulose polymer, and its structure is highly crystalline, making it hard, strong, crisp, and stiff to the handle.
Flax fibres can be up to 100 cm in length, and the fibres run the entire length of the stem and help hold it upright. Flax fibre absorbs and release water quickly, and the long fibres avoid streaks and lint. All these fibre properties being ideal for making tea towels.
